Highlights
from the NLPA 2008 Summer Meeting
Colorado
Springs, CO (Aug. 27, 2008) -- The
National Livestock Producers Association Board of Directors
had a productive meeting Aug. 13th through 16th. The
gathering began on Aug. 13 with the NLPA Sheep & Goat
Fund Committee meeting at the NLPA offices. That evening,
the Board toured NLPA's new offices at 13570 Meadowgrass Drive
in northern Colorado Springs.

Following
was a Chuckwagon Cookout at the Stuart Bar X Homestead, which
was hosted by Scott and Katie Stuart. The cookout also featured
cowboy poet / yodeler / humorist / songwriter / singer, Gary
McMahan.
On
Thursday, the NLPA Board and guests toured livestock facilities
in Weld County, Colo. Hosted by Producers Livestock Marketing
Association (PLMA-N.Salt Lake, Utah), the tours included PLMA's
beef feedlot, Harper Livestock lamb feedlot,
and Johnson's Dairy, all near Greeley, Colo. PLMA also graciously
hosted the group for lunch at their Greeley marketing facility.

On Friday, the Board explored "Over the Counter Derivatives
in the Ag Markets" with John Nelson, Producers Livestock
Marketing Assn.,Omaha. John Barthel, Regional Supervisor of
the Grain Inspection Packers & Stockyards Administration,
discussed GIPSA regulations and recent enforcement actions.
The
NLPA Board spent Friday afternoon discussing potential enhancements
to the Beef Checkoff with Dave Bateman, Cattlemen's Beef Board
Chairman; Tom Ramey, CEO Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research
Board; and Tom Jones, Chairman of the CBB Administration Subcommittee.
The Board had many suggestions, including several ideas about
how to make checkoff dollars more accessible to contractors.
NLPA has formally submitted the Board's comments to the CBB
for consideration.
On
Saturday, the Board had open sessions for both member managers
and producer directors. The NLPA Board also set its next meeting
for Monday through Wednesday, Jan. 26-28, 2009 in Phoenix,
Ariz., in conjunction with the Cattle Industry Annual Convention.
